External exFAT Storage Volume: Metadata stored on failing media | Auckland
Pattern to record: Repair scans stall or new errors appear at the same disk locations.
Identify the storage layer
Confirm that the external volume is actually exFAT and record which computer or device last wrote to it. Compare the cable and enclosure as well as the volume; a shared drive may encounter different host policies on Windows and macOS. One possible explanation is that critical file-system records occupy unreadable or unstable storage blocks.
Protect data before repair
Cancel format prompts until required files are secured. Repair scans on failing media can increase damage and reduce recovery.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Test the device and connection read-only before deciding whether the issue is media or file-system damage.
- Clone readable sectors first and review physical health before logical repair.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, recover data from the clone and replace the failing storage device. Verification should cover cross-platform mounting, large file transfer, safe removal and backup.
