Use Google Meet Companion Mode for a Second Screen in the Room
When a meeting room already supplies the microphone and speakers, opening another full meeting connection on a laptop can complicate the sound. Google Meet Companion mode provides a second-screen way to participate and present while leaving meeting audio to the room or another primary connection.
Before joining, decide which device supplies the room’s microphone and speakers. The laptop’s job might be sharing a document, following chat or viewing a presentation. Keep that role clear so nobody tries to fix the intentionally silent second connection by enabling more audio devices.
Join for the right purpose
From the meeting’s joining page, use the Companion mode option under other joining choices, or use Google’s g.co/companion entry point. Confirm the meeting identity before joining. In a supported room, check-in can associate your name with that room.
Companion mode has no microphone or meeting audio. To speak and listen, the room hardware or another device must provide a normal meeting connection. Some activities depend on the Workspace edition, so do not promise a poll or other feature solely because Companion mode opens.
Rehearse the room arrangement
Before the real meeting, ask an authorised remote colleague to join a short test. Speak from the normal room position and confirm they hear you through the intended room system. Present a harmless page from the laptop and confirm they see the correct content.
If the laptop is silent, first check whether it is in Companion mode. That result is expected and is not evidence of a broken sound card or a microphone permission fault. If the room audio fails, investigate the primary connection separately.
When leaving the room to continue alone, plan the transition to a normal audio connection. A second-screen setup that worked beside the conference speakerphone will not automatically become a complete personal meeting setup elsewhere.
End the laptop’s Companion connection when finished and verify the presentation has stopped. This gives the meeting a clear end without changing the room equipment’s established configuration.
