Pattern to record: The connector does not seat fully or one orientation behaves differently.
Use the correct Mac power design
Intel MacBooks span MagSafe and USB-C charging designs. Match the diagnostic procedure to the model and connector; a USB-C negotiation test is irrelevant to a MagSafe-only machine. One possible explanation is that packed debris or conductive residue prevents reliable contact.
Power and data precautions
Disconnect internal battery power before handling board connectors. Liquid cleaner left in a live port can create further damage.
Model-specific checks
- Separate SMC state, memory or storage symptoms from missing power rails using model-specific tests.
- Inspect the port without metal probes and compare a clean known-good cable.
Repair and startup verification
If the checks support this cause, clean safely or replace the damaged port assembly and verify every contact. Verification should cover cold start, charger and battery operation, sleep, wake, restart and thermal response.
