Pattern to record: Charging is slow or absent with one adapter but normal with a verified supported unit.
Use the correct Mac power design
Intel MacBooks span MagSafe and USB-C charging designs. Match the diagnostic procedure to the model and connector; a USB-C negotiation test is irrelevant to a MagSafe-only machine. One possible explanation is that the connected adapter cannot provide the voltage or power profile expected by the Mac.
Power and data precautions
Disconnect internal battery power before handling board connectors. Plug shape alone does not prove wattage or protocol compatibility.
Model-specific checks
- Separate SMC state, memory or storage symptoms from missing power rails using model-specific tests.
- Compare charger identity, cable rating and negotiated input on every supported port.
Repair and startup verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the incompatible or failed adapter or cable after the Mac-side path is confirmed. Verification should cover cold start, charger and battery operation, sleep, wake, restart and thermal response.
