Laptop NVMe Socket and PCIe Path: PCIe lane allocation conflict | Auckland
Pattern to record: The drive disappears only when a specific card or second M.2 device is installed.
Identify the connection
This guide concerns an M.2 NVMe connection using PCIe. Record the supported drive length and protocol, and protect data before comparing drives; an M.2-shaped SATA drive is not automatically compatible. One possible explanation is that another slot or firmware setting has reassigned lanes away from the storage interface.
Protect the drive
Isolate the battery before inserting or removing an M.2 drive. A hardware replacement cannot overcome a designed lane-sharing limit.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare firmware detection, another supported drive and socket power with data protected.
- Check the motherboard lane-sharing table and test supported configurations.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, move devices to supported slots or select the documented firmware option. Verification should cover cold boot, large reads, controlled writes, sleep, restart and health reporting.
