Laser Printer Paper Feed System: Cracked feed gear | Auckland
Pattern to record: Clicking accompanies a jam at the same point.
Locate the feed stage
Record the tray and the position of the sheet’s leading edge when it stops. Pickup, separation, duplex return and fuser exit are different stages; a jam message alone does not identify which roller failed. One possible explanation is that a split gear loses tooth alignment when torque rises.
Feed-path checks
- Note the leading edge position, inspect sensors and rollers and compare each tray.
- Rotate the mechanism by hand with power isolated and inspect the entire gear.
Before inspecting the mechanism
Fuser areas can remain hot long after printing stops. Continuing to print can distribute broken teeth through the path.
Correct the confirmed cause
If the checks support this cause, replace the damaged gear and check the shaft and adjacent load. Verification should cover single and multi-page jobs, every tray, duplex if fitted, different paper weights and exit.
