Mac mini Startup Power System: Shorted always-on rail | Auckland
Pattern to record: The power supply cycles or standby current is abnormal before startup.
Use the correct Mac power design
Identify the Mac mini generation and its specified power connection. Recent models use a mains lead; older designs may use an external supply. The USB-C ports are not a substitute for the desktop’s power input. A component on a standby supply is drawing excessive current before startup.
Power and data precautions
Mains-powered supplies contain hazardous sections and retained charge. Blind voltage injection can damage processors and storage.
Model-specific checks
- Verify the model-specific power lead or external supply, then separate power, startup and display-output stages.
- Measure resistance with all power removed and isolate the affected rail without heating sensitive parts.
Repair and startup verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the confirmed shorted component and inspect its supply stage. Verification should cover cold and warm start, all display outputs, USB load, sleep and sustained operation.
