Import a Notes Archive in a Small Batch Before Retiring Its Original Application
A notes migration is complete only when the useful content survives the import. A plausible number of note titles can hide missing attachments or features that the destination application does not support. Keep the original archive and application available during the comparison.
Choose a small representative export first. Include a plain note, a formatted note and one with an attachment you need. Record what should be present in each, including any folder organisation that matters to your work.
Choose the intended Notes destination
Apple Notes on Mac imports text formats including TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML and ENEX. Ordinary text files become new notes; one ENEX file can contain several notes, which are converted separately. Apple warns that unsupported Evernote attachments or features are not imported.
In Notes, select a destination folder under iCloud or On My Mac, then choose File, Import to Notes and select the sample files or folders. Where appropriate, enable Preserve folder structure on import through Show Options. Imported material appears in an Imported Notes folder in the chosen account area.
For Markdown, Apple documents rich-text conversion in macOS Tahoe 26 and later through File, Import Markdown. Check the installed version before expecting that menu or conversion behaviour.
Inspect the content rather than the count
Open every sample note and compare it with the source. Check headings, meaningful formatting, attachment contents and the relationship between related notes. If a feature is missing, record it explicitly before importing the rest.
Confirm that the account location suits the task. Choosing iCloud makes notes available to devices using that Apple Account; it is a different destination decision from keeping the import under On My Mac.
If the sample passes, expand the import in labelled batches and repeat the checks on varied examples. Avoid importing the same archive repeatedly without tracking the results, because duplicated notes can make acceptance harder.
Retain an independent copy of the source export until the complete set has been reviewed. Where the importer cannot preserve an essential attachment or feature, keep that material through another suitable format instead of declaring the migration finished because the note titles arrived.
