Correct the Reading Order of Linked Text Boxes in Pages
A newsletter can place one story in several text boxes. In Pages, those linked boxes form a thread with its own order. Moving a box to a more attractive position on the same page does not automatically make the text follow that new visual arrangement.
Work in a document copy and decide the intended reading path first. Sketch the sequence from the opening sentence to the final paragraph. This is particularly useful when a story bends around a photograph or continues below a separate sidebar.
Compare the thread numbers with the page
Select a linked text box and inspect the circle above it. The shared circle colour identifies its thread, and the numbers identify the boxes’ order. Apple notes that dragging a box within the same page does not automatically reorder its content.
To change that order, click the box’s circle, move the pointer over Layout Order and choose the intended order number. The thread’s text reflows. Adjust one box and inspect the resulting sequence before changing the others.
Read the last sentence in each box and the first sentence in the next. The transition should follow the story, not simply the nearest rectangle. Keep an unrelated sidebar in its own thread so its text cannot unexpectedly join the main article.
Check the ending after every layout change
Inspect the final box for the clipping indicator that means more text exists than fits. Resize the relevant boxes or add a linked box to accommodate the overflow. Shrinking a box to tidy the layout can otherwise hide the ending.
Avoid deleting boxes as an experiment. Apple explains that deleting one box reflows its text into remaining boxes, but deleting the only box in a thread deletes its content too. Preserve the copy while making structural changes.
After the layout is settled, review the intended print or exported output from beginning to end. Check the final paragraph explicitly. The editing view’s neat alignment is not enough if the reader receives a broken sequence or an incomplete story.
