Read a Mac Charging Hold or Charge Limit Before Changing Battery Settings
A Mac laptop connected to power can intentionally stop short of 100 percent. Read the battery menu’s explanation before treating the percentage alone as a fault. The useful distinction is between a scheduled charging hold, a configured limit and an unexplained failure to charge.
Optimised Battery Charging is available in macOS Big Sur 11 or later. It learns a charging routine and can delay charging beyond 80 percent. When that feature pauses charging, the menu reports Charging On Hold.
Charge Limit is a separate feature requiring an Apple-silicon Mac and macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later. It permits a limit from 80 to 100 percent and reports Charged to a percentage Limit. Apple says charging stops within a few percentage points of the chosen limit.
Prepare for an unusually long day away
If you need 100 percent sooner, use Charge to Full Now in the battery status menu. This is useful before a trip that differs from your usual desk routine. Make the request early enough to inspect the result before disconnecting power.
Check the actual charge level again before leaving. A selected command is not evidence that charging finished, and a full percentage does not predict how long your particular workload will run.
For a lasting policy change on a supported Mac, open System Settings, Battery and the information button beside Charging. Inspect the existing limit before choosing another. Keep the original setting in your notes if you are only comparing behaviour.
Interpret the result in context
Apple notes that either feature can occasionally allow charging to 100 percent to maintain accurate charge estimates. One full charge therefore does not prove that your limit setting disappeared.
If the menu does not show either expected policy state, or the requested charge does not progress, record the exact message, percentage, Mac model and connected power equipment. Keep that observation separate from the assumption that every pause around 80 percent is normal. The settings explain specific reported states; they do not diagnose every battery or charging problem.
