Save a Mac System Report With the Configuration Relevant to Your Problem
An accessory problem is easier to discuss when the Mac’s reported configuration is captured at the same time. A system report can record hardware, software and network information, but it needs a short description of the physical arrangement to be useful.
Before collecting it, write down the accessory model, cable and any dock or adapter in the path. Describe which port is in use and whether the accessory is powered. Keep this arrangement unchanged during the capture.
Open and save the report
On Mac, hold Option while opening the Apple menu and choose System Information. Apple also documents a System Report button under System Settings, General, About. Inspect the category relevant to the question, such as connected hardware or software versions.
Use File, Save to preserve the report. Give it a date and a short scenario name, such as dock-connected, so it cannot be confused with a report captured after the equipment was disconnected.
Apple offers Show More Information and Show Less Information. The shorter view retains much hardware and network information while reducing software detail. Treat that as a scope choice, not a promise that the report is anonymous.
Connect the report with a controlled observation
If support asks for a comparison, change only the requested part of the arrangement and save a separately labelled report. For example, a direct connection and a dock connection should have distinct notes and files.
Check that the expected category and observation are present before sending anything. An accessory appearing in a hardware list establishes that it was reported there; it does not prove every function or cable mode works correctly.
Review the report’s contents for identifying information, network details and local software paths. Share the necessary scope privately with the intended support team rather than uploading the entire report to a public forum.
Keep the original symptom description beside the saved report. Include what the accessory actually failed to do and the time of the test. Configuration evidence and the observed failure answer different questions, and a useful handover supplies both without presenting an untested hardware diagnosis as fact.
