MacBook Air Apple-Silicon Power Path: Shorted always-on rail | Auckland
Pattern to record: The charger cycles or current draw rises without normal startup activity.
Use the correct Mac power design
Use the exact Apple-silicon MacBook Air model to identify its charging ports and supported adapter. A black display alone does not prove the Mac is unpowered; check for other startup signs before pursuing the input circuit. One possible explanation is that a component on a standby supply is drawing excessive current before startup.
Power and data precautions
Mac batteries and logic boards must be isolated with model-appropriate procedures. Blind voltage injection can damage processors and storage.
Model-specific checks
- Verify the correct charger, inspect all ports and separate display absence from true no-power behaviour.
- Measure resistance with all power removed and isolate the affected rail without heating sensitive parts.
Repair and startup verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the confirmed shorted component and inspect its supply stage. Verification should cover cold start, charging on each supported port, battery operation, sleep, wake and restart.
