Match a Legacy App’s .NET Framework 3.5 Requirement to Your Windows Version
An older application may request .NET Framework 3.5 even when a newer framework is already installed. Record the application’s exact requirement before downloading another runtime or removing the one the PC already uses.
Microsoft notes that .NET Framework 4 does not support applications built for the older 1.1–3.5 framework range. A larger version number therefore does not automatically satisfy this particular dependency. Check whether the application supplier offers a supported newer release before adding the older runtime.
Identify the Windows release first
Press Windows+R, enter winver.exe and read the version and build. The installation path changed with Windows 11 version 26H1, so “Windows 11” alone is not enough information for this decision.
For Windows 11 version 25H2 and earlier, Microsoft directs users to the Windows feature route. Search for Windows Features, open Turn Windows features on or off, select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0), and follow the download or restart prompts.
Starting with version 26H1, build 28000, .NET Framework 3.5 is a standalone installer instead of a Windows component. Use the installer linked from Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions for the stated version. The installers are version-specific.
Keep the app name and its requirement beside the Windows version in your notes. That prevents a later helper from repeating an obsolete route without knowing why it failed.
Add only the required dependency
For the feature route, ordinary desktop use does not require selecting the optional WCF activation items unless the application’s documented role requires them. If an offline feature installation needs source files, Microsoft warns that the source must match the Windows operating-system version.
After installation and any requested restart, launch the affected app and perform a harmless representative task using sample data. Confirm that the original dependency prompt is gone and that the application produces the expected result.
Preserve any remaining error exactly. Successful runtime installation does not establish that every other requirement of an old program is supported. Continue with the supplier’s compatibility guidance rather than repeatedly adding unrelated framework components.
