Transfer a File Between Two Windows PCs With Nearby Sharing
Nearby Sharing can transfer a document between supported Windows PCs using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It is useful for a small handoff, but selecting the right receiving computer matters as much as getting the transfer to complete.
Put both PCs nearby and confirm their displayed names with the person using the receiving device. For your own machines, verify which Microsoft account each is using before relying on the My devices only scope. Begin with a non-sensitive test file if the setup is new.
Limit who can discover the transfer
On both computers, open Settings, System, Nearby sharing and choose the appropriate scope. My devices only suits eligible computers signed into your account; Everyone nearby is broader. Microsoft notes that the broader setting makes the PC name and Bluetooth address available to nearby devices.
Check the receiving PC's Save files I receive to location. A transfer can appear to vanish when it was simply saved somewhere unexpected. Ensure Bluetooth and the relevant wireless connectivity are available on the devices. Do not make an untrusted public network private merely to troubleshoot discovery.
On the sending PC, select the file in File Explorer and choose Share, then the verified receiving device. On the receiver, accept the intended transfer using Save or Save & open. Decline an unexpected request rather than assuming it came from the person beside you.
Open the received copy
Locate the saved file on the receiving computer and inspect its contents. Compare the name and size when useful, then confirm the document opens in the intended application. A successful transfer notification does not prove that the receiver has suitable software or that you selected the latest version.
Keep the original until the recipient confirms the correct content. Afterwards, return Nearby Sharing to the scope you normally want or turn it off when no longer needed. This is a file-copy task, not a complete migration of applications, accounts or backups.
