Diagnose Choppy OBS Local Recordings With a Controlled Workload Comparison
A smooth application window does not prove that OBS has enough resources to compose and encode the recording at the same time. Compare a repeatable local recording before changing hardware or blaming the internet connection.
Establish one reproducible sample
Choose a short action with visible movement, such as scrolling the same sample document at a steady pace. Record the OBS version, output resolution, frame rate and encoder choice. Keep the same scene and action for each comparison.
Make a baseline recording and inspect the saved file. Note where motion becomes uneven and whether the problem appears during the same part of the action. A single slow playback application can complicate the observation, so check the file in the intended editing or viewing workflow as well.
OBS needs GPU resources to compose scenes. Reducing output resolution can lower encoding load, while reducing frame rate reduces the number of frames that need rendering and encoding. Complex sources and filters can also add work.
Change one demand at a time
Save the starting settings. First close an unrelated resource-heavy application that you recognise and can safely stop, then repeat the sample. If that changes nothing, restore the comparison conditions before trying a lower output resolution or frame rate.
Evaluate the tradeoff as well as smoothness. A smaller recording may move smoothly but make the error message or spreadsheet text unreadable. Keep only a setting that still serves the explanation.
For a complex scene, compare a simplified test collection with fewer expensive effects. Merely hiding a source does not guarantee that it consumes no resources. Avoid redesigning the whole production collection before this small comparison identifies a useful difference.
Leave the base canvas size alone initially; changing it can require rearranging source geometry. Keep a compact note of each changed setting and the corresponding file. If the stutter remains unexplained, those paired samples give support clearer evidence than a long list of simultaneous changes or an assumption that the graphics card must be faulty.
