Link to a Stable Passage in Pages With a Body-Text Bookmark
A report may refer several times to the same definition, method or limitation. A typed instruction such as “see page 7” becomes an editing obligation when earlier text grows. A bookmark provides a named destination that you can check directly while preparing the document.
Start with one reference whose intended meaning is clear. For example, a results paragraph might need to send the reader to the explanation of how an observation was classified. Choose the beginning of that explanation rather than an arbitrary spot that happens to sit on the correct page today.
Pages bookmarks are available in word-processing documents and can mark body text, not text inside a table, text box, shape, chart, header or footer. Select the destination text or put the insertion point before it, then open Document, Bookmarks and click Add Bookmark.
Select the wording that should become a link, press Command-K, choose Bookmark in Link to, and select the destination. Use Go to Bookmark to inspect where it leads. Deleting a bookmark breaks links that point to it, so remove or correct those references when retiring a destination.
Make the link useful without clicking it
Use wording that tells the reader what they will find, such as the name of the method or definition. Several identical “click here” references make a long report harder to review because the visible sentence does not identify the destination.
In the working copy, add a temporary paragraph before the bookmarked passage. Follow the link again and read the opening sentence at the destination. Then remove the temporary paragraph. This is a deliberate acceptance check; it is more informative than seeing that the text merely has link styling.
If the needed content is a table, place the bookmark in an appropriate body-text introduction and check that the table is clearly identified from there. Avoid moving a table into a different structure solely to force a bookmark into its cells.
Before issuing the report, follow each important internal reference in the actual delivery format. Check destinations after renamed or removed sections, and keep any surrounding explanation necessary for readers who use a printed copy. The editable source and its issued reading copy should describe the same route through the material.
