Convert Pages Footnotes to Endnotes Without Losing Citation Connections
A report can become difficult to read when explanatory notes occupy much of each page. Moving them to the end may improve the main narrative, but the result still needs an unambiguous connection between every citation and its explanation. Treat the change as a document-wide editorial decision.
Save a working copy and identify three notes to follow: one near the beginning, one beside a table discussion and one near the end. Record a few distinctive words from each explanation. Those words will help you detect a wrong association even if the note numbers change.
Pages allows one note type per document. Converting a note converts all notes: Footnotes belong at page bottoms, Endnotes at the document end, and Section Endnotes at section ends. Citation insertion in a word-processing document is limited to body text, not text boxes. The first inserted note starts as a footnote.
Choose the destination deliberately
Click an existing note, open the Footnotes tab in the Format sidebar, and choose the required Type. Do this once in the working copy. You can double-click a citation number to move to its associated note, and double-click the number in the note to return to the citation.
Use the three recorded examples to check both directions. Read the sentence containing each mark and the explanation it now reaches. An apparently complete note list is insufficient if one explanation has been attached to the wrong claim during earlier editing.
Choose between document-end and section-end notes according to how the report will be read. A person using one chapter independently may benefit from nearby chapter notes. A short report read from beginning to end may be easier with one consolidated notes area.
Review the issued reading sequence
Inspect the boundary between the final narrative paragraph and the notes. Check that the notes have enough context to identify their sources or explanations without requiring the reader to guess which sentence was intended.
After the final text edits, examine the delivery copy as well as the editable report. Follow the same three citations again and inspect any changed chapter boundary. Keep the original working version until the revised citation layout has been accepted, especially when another editor will continue adding references.
