Add Verified Phonetic Readings to Names in a Pages Handout
An event handout may contain names that a presenter needs to pronounce correctly while preserving their written form. A phonetic guide can place that help beside the original text. Establish the reading with the person or an appropriate language reviewer before entering it into the document.
Prepare a small name list with three fields in your working notes: the exact written name, the confirmed pronunciation guide and the source of that confirmation. This prevents a plausible software suggestion from quietly becoming the official pronunciation in a public handout.
Pages supports phonetic guides when a Chinese, Japanese or Korean keyboard is configured, even for words in another language. Select the intended text without trailing punctuation or paragraph breaks, Control-click it and choose Phonetic Guide Text. Choose an offered reading or type the verified guide, then click outside the guide window to apply it.
Check the guide against the intended name
Start with one entry and compare it character by character with your confirmed reference. Check both the original spelling and the guide. A correct guide attached to only part of a longer name can still mislead a presenter.
Keep neighbouring punctuation outside the selected name. Inspect the result in a complete sentence as well as on a list line; the guide should clearly belong to the name and should not look like part of the next entry.
To revise a guide, open Phonetic Guide Text on the existing word and change its text. The same control offers Remove Phonetic Guide Text. Available suggestions depend on the configured keyboards; File, Advanced, Language & Region controls the document language when the expected suggestions are absent.
Proof the version people will actually read
Ask the language reviewer to check the formatted handout, not only the separate notes. At the intended reading size, the guide must remain legible and distinguishable from the main text. Pay particular attention to long names and lines that wrap.
When a name changes, update its confirmation record and the document together. Recheck repeated appearances instead of assuming every instance was corrected. Keep the pronunciation notes with the working material so a later editor knows which readings were confirmed and which still require clarification before the handout is issued.
