RAID Volume Metadata: Unreadable member metadata
Pattern to record: A member repeatedly drops out or its metadata cannot be read consistently.
Identify the storage layer
RAID metadata describes member order and array layout; it is separate from the file system inside the assembled volume. Record the controller, RAID level and physical drive order before import, rebuild or file-system repair. Failing sectors on a member can prevent the controller from reading layout or state information reliably.
Protect data before repair
Do not initialise, reorder or rebuild uncertain members automatically. Rebuild load can overwhelm another marginal member.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Record drive order and controller details and image unstable members before importing anything.
- Record the original slot order and preserve readable data from failing members before intensive array operations.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, recover from protected member images and replace failed hardware only within a verified recovery plan. Verification should cover array assembly, share access, redundancy state, restart and independent backup.
