RAID Volume Metadata: Member disconnect versus file-system damage
Pattern to record: Degraded or foreign status appears after a cable, power or removal event.
Identify the storage layer
RAID metadata describes member order and array layout; it is separate from the file system inside the assembled volume. Record the controller, RAID level and physical drive order before import, rebuild or file-system repair. A lost member connection changes array state while uncommitted writes can also affect the file system above it.
Protect data before repair
Do not initialise, reorder or rebuild uncertain members automatically. Reconnecting members in guessed positions can obscure the last consistent state.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Record drive order and controller details and image unstable members before importing anything.
- Record which member disconnected and compare its state with the controller’s expected layout without importing blindly.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, restore a verified connection and recover the correct array state before checking the file system. Verification should cover array assembly, share access, redundancy state, restart and independent backup.
