Browse a Synology Snapshot Without Rewinding the Live Shared Folder
A team may need yesterday's spreadsheet while today's project folder already contains newer work. Restoring the entire shared folder would be a broader operation than inspecting one older file. In Synology Snapshot Replication, the recovery action matters as much as the snapshot date.
Choose the historical point deliberately
Confirm that the shared folder has existing snapshots and identify a time before the unwanted edit. Record the folder name, selected snapshot and document path. If the uncertain edit happened around midnight or after a time-zone change, compare the actual document contents instead of relying only on the date label.
Synology documents Browse for viewing snapshot content and downloading or copying items. Restore to this snapshot changes the storage space back to that historical state. Clone with a new name creates a separate storage space. These options have different effects; a button in a recovery screen should not be treated as a generic open command.
Compare a separate copy first
Use the available browsing workflow to obtain the required item in a clearly labelled comparison location. Keep the current document there as a separate copy if needed, with names that identify which is historical. Open both in the relevant application and compare the actual missing rows, pages or attachments.
Ask the document owner which content should return to the working version. Copying a specific section into today's document may be more appropriate than replacing it entirely. Preserve both versions until that decision is confirmed, especially when colleagues have edited the file since the snapshot was taken.
If a whole-folder rollback is required, plan it as a coordinated change with the people using that share. Review the package's capacity requirements and restrictions for the installed system before selecting Restore or Clone. A snapshot on the same storage system also does not establish an independent backup if that system fails. Record the recovered file and verification result without presenting a successful browse as proof that every recovery path has been tested.
