Account for Shapes Assigned to Two Active Visio Layers
Layer names are useful only when their intended meaning is clear. Decide whether a category describes a system, a review responsibility or another aspect of the drawing before treating membership as an exclusive classification.
Use desktop Visio for Windows. Plan categories Electrical and Inspection on a practice page. Choose a basic shape with no preset layer assignments.
Inspect active membership
In Home, Layers, Layer Properties, create both layers and mark them Active. Add a new instance of that shape, then inspect Home, Layers, Assign to Layer. It should have both active memberships.
Layers and active status are page-local. A new page does not inherit them. Copying an assigned shape adds its layers to the destination or uses existing matching layer names.
Inspect both pages after copying. On each, two memberships still classify one object.
Separate classification from the inventory
Keep one register row per object with separate category columns. Adding category totals can count the same object twice; reconcile asset identities instead.
Discuss the category names with the drawing’s maintainer before applying them broadly. Two pages can use a familiar label for different purposes unless the team has documented its meaning. Preserve the page and object identifiers with any membership observation.
Finish by checking a new unassigned object and a copied object separately. The accepted drawing should reflect the intended categories on the intended page, with overlapping memberships explained rather than accidentally erased.
