Windows NTFS System Volume: Encryption key access fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: The device is healthy but unlock fails after account, TPM or hardware change.
Identify the storage layer
This guide applies to an NTFS-formatted Windows volume. Confirm the file system and physical-drive condition before interpreting directory, permission or repair messages; logical repair cannot make failing media reliable. The data remains encrypted because the authorised key path is unavailable; first identify whether BitLocker, EFS or another encryption product is actually enabled.
Protect data before repair
Avoid writing repairs to the only copy of important data. There is no legitimate technical shortcut around strong encryption.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Image or clone unstable media first, then examine file-system and storage health separately.
- Identify the encryption layer and confirm its authorised credentials, certificates or recovery records before changing metadata.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, restore authorised key access or recover with the valid recovery credential. Verification should cover verified startup, file permissions, large file reads, updates and backup.
