Windows NTFS System Volume: Permission metadata fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: Files are present but access is denied after migration or restore.
Identify the storage layer
This guide applies to an NTFS-formatted Windows volume. Confirm the file system and physical-drive condition before interpreting directory, permission or repair messages; logical repair cannot make failing media reliable. One possible explanation is that ownership or access-control records no longer match intended users.
Protect data before repair
Avoid writing repairs to the only copy of important data. Blanket permission changes can expose private files or break applications.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Image or clone unstable media first, then examine file-system and storage health separately.
- Confirm encryption, ownership and account identity before changing permissions.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, repair authorised ownership and ACL records without opening unrelated data. Verification should cover verified startup, file permissions, large file reads, updates and backup.
