Add a Known Project Folder to Windows Search Deliberately
A file that opens from its folder but is absent from search results presents a different problem from a file you cannot locate at all. Start by opening the known folder directly and confirming the filename and a small piece of its contents.
Write down the folder path. This gives you a fixed reference while checking search settings and prevents a search experiment from turning into an unnecessary data-recovery exercise.
Check whether the location is included
Open Windows search settings under Privacy & security. Microsoft’s documentation uses Search and Searching Windows labels for different versions. In Classic mode, the default indexed locations include Documents, Pictures, Music and Desktop.
Use Customize search locations and then Modify to inspect the selected locations. Add the specific project folder when appropriate, rather than immediately enabling the broadest possible scope. Enhanced mode covers the whole PC and uses more resources.
If you can find a filename but not words inside it, inspect Advanced indexing options and the File Types settings. Indexing file properties alone is different from indexing properties and contents. Content results depend on the file type and its supported indexing behaviour.
Use one known file as the acceptance test
Allow indexing time to work after changing scope; an initial index can take hours. Avoid repeatedly changing settings while expecting instant results.
Search for the exact known filename first. Then, if content indexing is relevant, try a distinctive phrase from that file. Note which test succeeds and which does not.
If neither works, retain the direct path and current indexing settings as evidence. If the file stops opening from its actual location, investigate that new symptom separately.
Do not move valuable files into another folder merely to make this test pass. A useful outcome is an understood search boundary and a reproducible result, with the original data still in its intended location.
