Check Excel Calculation Mode When Edited Inputs Leave Old Results
A formula can remain intact while its displayed answer is out of date. Before rewriting it, select the result and inspect the formula bar. Confirm that it still contains a formula, and identify one input it is supposed to use.
This workflow uses desktop Excel for Windows, including Microsoft 365, Excel 2024 and Excel 2021. Save current work and note which other workbooks are open before changing calculation settings.
Establish whether recalculation is being deferred
Open File, Options, Formulas and inspect Workbook Calculation. Automatic updates dependent formulas when relevant values change. Manual defers that work until you request recalculation. Microsoft warns that changing these desktop options affects all open workbooks, so coordinate the change if another model deliberately uses manual calculation.
On the Formulas tab, Calculate Now recalculates open worksheets and updates open chart sheets. Calculate Sheet has the narrower active-sheet scope. Choose the intended scope and allow the operation to finish before reading the result.
A result that changes after calculation is evidence of previously deferred work. It does not establish that the formula itself is correct, or that a separate external data source has been refreshed.
Prove the ongoing behaviour with one known relationship
In a disposable workbook, put 7 in A1 and =A1*3 in B1. After calculation, the expected answer is 21. Change A1 to 8. Under Automatic, the expected new result is 24 without a separate calculation request.
Use that small test to confirm the setting you intend to keep, then return to the real workbook. Select one authorised input change with a predictable consequence, or use a working copy if the real model must remain untouched. Check both an immediate result and the report figure that depends on it.
If the report still disagrees, inspect its actual references and source data instead of repeatedly pressing calculation controls. Record any deliberate manual-calculation requirement with the workbook handover, including when results must be recalculated before they are issued. A familiar-looking saved total should not be mistaken for a freshly evaluated answer.
