Desktop LED Monitor: Power-supply capacitor deterioration | Auckland
Pattern to record: Startup is delayed, brightness pulses or the display improves after warming.
Separate the panel from the source
This guide concerns an LCD monitor with LED illumination. Compare the monitor’s own on-screen menu with an external image; a defect visible on the menu is different from a problem limited to one cable or source. One possible explanation is that aged capacitors no longer smooth the monitor's internal supply rails.
Display-path checks
- Test another source and cable, open the on-screen menu and separate panel, backlight and input faults.
- Measure ripple and startup behaviour with safe isolation procedures.
Handling and electrical safety
Monitor power boards can contain hazardous voltage and retained charge. Mains capacitors can retain dangerous charge after unplugging.
Image and input verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the failed rated components and inspect heat-stressed areas. Verification should cover all inputs, native resolution, brightness range, sleep wake and extended display.
For an assessment of your desktop monitor, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
