Docking Station Ethernet System: Cable strain damage | Auckland
Pattern to record: Brief movement causes link loss despite an otherwise good cable.
Separate the adapter from the network
Dock Ethernet shares the dock’s host connection and power arrangement. Compare network-only use with displays and storage active, then distinguish a disappearing USB device from a live adapter with no Ethernet link. One possible explanation is that a broken latch or side load keeps the plug from maintaining contact.
Link and configuration checks
- Separate dock firmware, host USB-C link, power and the network side using controlled comparisons.
- Inspect plug retention and port shell alignment under gentle handling.
Before internal work
Use the dock's correct power supply during diagnosis. Taping a loaded cable can transfer force into motherboard solder joints.
Verify the network path
If the checks support this cause, replace the cable and repair a loose port before further use. Verification should cover link speed, displays plus network load, sleep, undock, redock and restart.
