Check a Document After a LibreOffice–Microsoft Office Round Trip
Being able to open and save a file format does not prove that every feature survives a trip through another application. When returning a document edited in LibreOffice to a Microsoft Office user, test the actual returned file against what the recipient needs to do.
Keep the original unchanged and agree on the required output format. For a first test, choose a representative file with the features that matter, such as a wide table, a chart or a complex slide. Record the application versions used at both ends.
Save a deliberate handover copy
LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office formats including DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. Use File, Save As and select the required file type for the handover copy. Confirm the filename and extension rather than assuming the default format matches the recipient’s request.
LibreOffice documents conversion challenges with some complex layout and formatting features, and with some spreadsheet functions. A file with macros needs separate compatibility assessment; do not enable or trust unknown code merely to see whether the document works.
Keep any warnings from the save process with your review notes. They identify an area to inspect, not a complete list of everything that could differ.
Test in the recipient’s application
Open the handover copy in the intended Microsoft Office application. Compare important content and layout with the original or an agreed visual reference. Check page breaks, table boundaries, labels and symbols relevant to this particular file.
For a workbook, verify meaningful formulas and totals with known sample inputs. For a presentation, run the slides and check required media or interactions. For a report, inspect the output pages rather than judging only the editing view.
If a feature changes, resolve it deliberately or agree on an alternative deliverable. A reviewed PDF may help communicate appearance, but it does not replace an editable-file requirement. Retain both the original and accepted handover copy until the recipient confirms that the returned document supports the intended work.
