Moving From Windows to Mac: Verify More Than the Documents Folder
A successful file transfer does not by itself recreate a Windows working environment on a Mac. Plan the move around tasks you need to complete, then check both the transferred data and the Mac applications that will open it.
Match the migration tool to the Mac
Download Windows Migration Assistant from Apple's current migration page. Its download choice depends on the macOS version on the destination Mac. For example, Apple's listed version 3 supports Windows 10 or later when transferring to macOS Sonoma 14 or later; older destination releases use different downloads.
Back up the Windows computer and list each Windows user whose files matter. Apple instructs users to log in to each additional Windows account and repeat the transfer. Copying the current user's information is not an audit of every person's Desktop or Downloads folder.
For managed work computers, involve the administrator before changing security software or network settings. A migration should not leave an office computer with its usual protection disabled.
Validate destinations with real tasks
On the Mac, choose migration from a Windows PC and follow the displayed pairing instructions. Review the selected categories before continuing. After completion, sign in to the migrated account rather than assuming all files will appear in an account created earlier.
Apple lists different destinations for different information. Documents reach the home folder, while photos may need to be imported into Photos afterwards. Transferred bookmarks and mail information also deserve their own checks.
Open one file from every important category. Confirm that your spreadsheet formulas, accounting export or design project can be used in an appropriate Mac application. Do not assume a Windows-only program becomes a working Mac app because its documents arrived.
Migration does not delete the PC's information. Keep the original computer and backup until your daily tasks work and you have established a backup on the Mac.
