FileVault on Mac: Plan Recovery Before You Need It
FileVault protects access to the Mac's startup data, but the recovery arrangement matters as much as the switch. Before enabling it, decide how you would regain access if you forgot the login password or the usual account owner became unavailable.
Understand the hardware difference
Apple states that storage data on Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip is encrypted automatically. FileVault adds protection tied to authorised login credentials. On Macs without either chip, enabling FileVault is required to encrypt the startup data in this way.
This distinction does not mean a backup disk automatically shares the same protection. Treat your Mac login, FileVault recovery route and external-backup password as separate items in your recovery planning.
Choose an accessible recovery route
In the macOS Tahoe 26 guide, Apple's setup path is System Settings, Privacy & Security, FileVault. An administrator chooses an offered account-based recovery option or a recovery key. A work or school Mac may have an organisation-managed arrangement; check that before altering it.
If you receive a recovery key, store it securely outside the encrypted startup disk and away from the computer itself. A screenshot saved only on the Mac you may be unable to unlock is not a practical recovery plan. Avoid including the key in repair enquiries, public screenshots or shared documents.
Write a brief private note describing where recovery information is held and who may use it. Do not put the actual key into a general inventory. If other people need to start this Mac, check whether their accounts are enabled to unlock it.
Finish by confirming the setting and reviewing your independent backup. Encryption protects confidentiality; it does not replace a copy of your files. Losing all authorised unlock methods can make protected data inaccessible, so resolve uncertainty while the Mac still works.
