Recover an Overwritten OneDrive File Without Rolling Back Everything
An overwritten document needs a different recovery approach from a deleted document. If the file still exists in OneDrive but its contents are wrong, check its version history before trying broad recovery actions.
First, identify the correct file and account. Similar folder names can exist in personal OneDrive, a work account and local storage. Note the approximate time when the unwanted change occurred and whether anyone else has edited the file since. That narrows the version search and prevents an older copy from silently replacing someone else's valid work.
Preserve anything worth keeping
Close active editing sessions where practical and save a separate copy of the current document if it contains newer material you might need. Give that copy a clear name. The recovery objective may be to compare two versions and recover a paragraph, rather than replace the entire current file.
On the OneDrive website, select the file, open its context menu and choose Version history. The OneDrive sync app also exposes Version history from File Explorer. Choose the relevant historical entry and use its Restore action when you have identified the version you want.
Restoring makes the selected version current. Microsoft states that the previous current version remains as an earlier entry in the history. Even so, do not use that as a substitute for checking which work you are about to replace.
Confirm content after restoration
Open the restored document and inspect the missing section, relevant worksheet or expected image. Check dates and totals if they matter to the task. Ask collaborators to reopen the file before further editing so everyone is working from the intended version.
Version history applies beyond Office documents, but available history is limited and organisational settings can affect it. If the required entry is absent, stop repeated restoration attempts and look for an independent backup. A local-only file that never reached OneDrive cannot acquire cloud history retrospectively.
