What Windows Backup Actually Restores on a New PC
Windows Backup can make a replacement computer feel familiar, but its list of saved items should be read carefully. Seeing an app icon return is different from having that application, its licence and its working data ready to use.
The consumer Windows Backup app uses a personal Microsoft account. Its folder backup works through OneDrive, while settings and app information have their own categories. Work or school accounts are outside this consumer app's supported account scope; an employer may provide a different migration process.
Review the categories before retiring the old PC
Open Windows Backup and expand each section. Check which folders are selected and whether backup reports a problem. Files kept somewhere else, such as a custom folder at the root of a drive, need a separate coverage decision. Confirm recent examples from the selected folders are available through the correct OneDrive account.
Make a short application list based on what you actually use each week. Beside each name, note its installer source, sign-in requirement and how its data is exported or backed up. Keep licence details private. Do not assume a program's database is included because the program appears in the backup interface.
Understand the restore result
During setup on the replacement PC, sign in with the same personal Microsoft account and select the appropriate available backup. Windows can restore app pins; selecting a Store app can begin restoring it, while other apps may direct you to a website for an installer. Installation and application-specific recovery still require attention.
Before erasing the old machine, complete a real task on the new one: open a recent document, locate a saved project and produce an ordinary output from each essential app. Check the content, not simply whether the app launches. Finally, confirm that the replacement computer's own backup is configured. Keep the old data until these checks are complete and a separate recoverable copy exists.
