Print a PDF From a Printer USB Port Without Relying on the Computer Driver
A printer's front USB socket does not automatically mean it can open every file from a flash drive. Direct printing depends on the model, supported storage and file formats. It also uses the printer's own controls, so a favourite computer print preset may not apply.
Check capability before preparing the drive
Read the model's direct-print and compatible-drive instructions. Brother's HL-L8245CDW manual, for example, lists PDF, JPEG, TIFF, XPS and PRN support. That list does not establish support for a Word document or for another printer that happens to have a USB port.
Place the intended document on a drive you own and trust. Use a clear, non-sensitive filename so you can recognise it on the small display. Check the PDF on a computer first: correct version, page count, orientation and any restrictions that may affect printing.
Keep a separate copy of the document. There is no reason to carry your only copy to a shared printer, or to fill the drive with unrelated confidential material merely to print one file.
Set the job on the printer
Follow the documented port and menu sequence. In the cited Brother procedure, the panel offers settings such as tray, size, type, orientation and two-sided output, with availability depending on the file. Inspect these before accepting default settings.
If direct printing is disabled by the printer's access controls, ask its administrator for the approved route. Do not try to bypass that restriction by renaming the file or changing another user's settings.
Print one copy or a small proof where supported. Check scaling, page order and paper choice before repeating the job. Stay until output is complete; Brother specifically warns against removing the drive while printing is still in progress.
Collect the paper and your drive, then verify the final count. Direct printing is complete when the actual document is correct and accounted for, not simply when the filename appears on the panel.
