Repair Windows Through Windows Update While Keeping Apps
Windows 11 has a recovery option called Fix problems using Windows Update. It reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving applications, files and settings. That makes it a distinct option to evaluate before a more disruptive reset.
This is most relevant when Windows still runs but system components or Windows Update are malfunctioning. It is not a treatment for a physically failing drive, overheating or an unstable power supply. If the computer is losing data or shutting down unexpectedly, address those risks before starting a lengthy software operation.
Check that the option is available
Open Settings, System, Recovery and look for Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft documents minimum Windows/update requirements, and the option can be unavailable on devices whose updates are managed by an organisation. Its absence does not justify removing management policies or downloading an unofficial repair utility.
Back up important work even though the operation is designed to preserve it. Close applications and arrange reliable power and internet throughout the reinstall. Read the restart choice before confirming; do not start immediately before a meeting or other task that requires the PC.
Select Reinstall now under that specific option and follow the Windows prompts. The process returns to Windows Update to download and install a repair version. If you did not choose an automatic restart, complete the requested restart after installation.
Verify the original problem
Write down the failing action before the repair, including any error code. Afterwards, repeat that same action and check the result. Also open an essential application and a recent document to confirm your normal workflow remains available.
If the problem continues, retain the error and repair outcome for further diagnosis. Repeating the same reinstall without new evidence is unlikely to clarify the cause. Keep this procedure distinct from Reset this PC: the labels and their effects on installed software are different.
