Microphone Works Somewhere Else? Check Windows App Access
If a microphone records in one application but not another, begin with the failing application's access and input selection. Replacing the microphone is premature when the same device can already capture sound elsewhere.
Use a short, non-sensitive recording for comparison. Keep the microphone, port and physical mute setting the same. Confirm which input the working app selected; a laptop's built-in microphone and a headset microphone can produce different results while looking like one audio setup.
Check the Windows access layers
Open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone. Review the device-level access setting and the option allowing apps to use the microphone. Listed Microsoft Store apps can have their own switches. Desktop applications use the separate desktop-app access setting and may not have individual switches on this page.
Enable only the access necessary for the application you intend to use. If a setting is controlled by your organisation, ask its administrator rather than trying to bypass it. Website permissions are an additional layer when the meeting runs in a browser; Windows permission alone does not grant every website access.
Within the failing application, select the intended input device and confirm that it is not muted. Close and reopen the app after changing access if needed, then make the same brief recording or use its preview meter.
Interpret the result carefully
If both local test and target app now capture the intended microphone, check with a short real call before an important meeting. If only the local test works, preserve that distinction and investigate the app's configuration. If neither works, return to device detection, physical mute and connection checks.
Windows displays a microphone indicator when it detects use, but an indicator is not proof that the correct microphone or useful speech is reaching the other participant. Listen to the test output. Remove test recordings when they are no longer needed, and review permissions for apps you do not use.
