Workstation Firmware and POST: Depleted RTC battery | Auckland
Pattern to record: Time and firmware settings reset after mains or main-battery power is removed.
Record the boot configuration
Workstations may have multiple memory channels, add-in storage controllers and protected array settings. Record the installed layout and diagnostic code; preserve RAID configuration when reducing the machine to a supported test configuration. One possible explanation is that the low-power cell can no longer retain clock and setup data.
Preserve recovery options
Do not initialise storage controllers or clear security data during basic POST diagnosis. Some laptops use rechargeable or cabled cells that must not be substituted blindly.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Use diagnostic codes and minimum supported configuration while preserving RAID and security settings.
- Measure the cell and confirm settings persist with a known replacement.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, replace the correct cell and restore documented settings. Verification should cover cold boot, all memory channels, storage controller state, expansion devices and sustained work.
