End a Chrome Incognito Session and Check the Files It Leaves Behind
Incognito limits what Chrome retains after its private browsing session ends, but it is not an automatic cleanup of every file you create. Before using a shared computer, decide whether that device is appropriate for the account and information involved. Incognito cannot make an untrusted device trustworthy.
Finish the session deliberately
Save needed work through the application’s approved route and sign out of the website when you finish. Inspect whether more than one Incognito window is open. Google explains that another Incognito window continues the same session; closing only the visible tab does not end it.
Close all Incognito windows. Chrome then removes the session’s temporary site data and does not retain a record of those visited sites in its ordinary browsing history. Check the window arrangement carefully rather than assuming that one closed window covered the entire session.
Do not close another person’s active work to perform this check. On a shared machine, use the agreed user-session arrangement and keep each person’s work separate.
Inspect the durable artifacts
Files downloaded in Incognito remain on the device until they are deleted. Bookmarks and reading-list items created there also remain available in regular browsing. Check the actual download destination and any files you copied elsewhere during the task.
Move authorised work to its intended protected location and remove unneeded local copies according to the owner’s requirements. Deleting a Downloads-list entry is not the same as deleting its underlying file. If a confidential file reached a shared or synced folder, consider those copies separately.
Google also states that Incognito does not hide activity from websites or organisations managing the network. Do not report this cleanup as anonymity or secure erasure.
The practical completion check is modest: all of your Incognito windows are closed, the intended website session is finished, and any retained downloads or bookmarks have a deliberate disposition. For recurring private work, use an appropriate personal device or separate operating-system account rather than relying on memory of these cleanup steps.
