Connect OneNote Recording Playback to the Notes Written at That Moment
A note written during a discussion may be your question or interpretation rather than the speaker's exact words. OneNote can preserve the relationship between that note and the recording time, helping you return to the context without claiming that the note is a transcript.
Start with a short recording of your own voice in a private practice notebook. Use desktop OneNote for Microsoft 365, 2024 or 2021 on Windows and a working microphone. For any later session involving other people, agree on the recording before starting.
Write notes while the recording runs
Click where the recording should appear, then use Home, Record Audio. Microsoft notes that some versions expose the recording button through Transcribe. Recording starts when the media icon is added. Use Stop when finished; click the media icon and Play to listen again.
Microsoft documents that notes taken during the recording are linked to it. On the Audio & Video tab, See Playback positions the cursor in the notes at the corresponding recording moment. This is a relationship to when the note was written, not a guarantee that its wording reproduces what was said.
For the trial, speak about three fictional topics and type a short, different note during each. Include one question that you deliberately leave unanswered until a later topic. Stop the recording normally and play it from the beginning with See Playback enabled.
Check timing and interpretation separately
Watch which note the cursor reaches as each topic plays. Confirm that the note belongs to the expected part of the conversation. Then compare the unanswered question with the later answer: they should remain distinct pieces of information rather than being treated as a single quoted statement.
When adding a clarification afterwards, label it as a later editorial note. Do not assume it proves what you originally recorded or thought at the earlier moment. Preserve the audio context when resolving ambiguous wording.
Before using this method for longer work, reopen the notebook page and repeat a playback check. Decide whether the captured audio and written notes are appropriate for the notebook's audience. A useful result combines audible context with clearly identified contemporaneous notes; it does not turn every typed reaction into verified testimony.
