Gaming PC UEFI Configuration: Depleted RTC battery | Auckland
Pattern to record: Time and firmware settings reset after mains or main-battery power is removed.
Record the boot configuration
Separate a stock configuration from memory profiles, CPU tuning and GPU changes. A boot fault that began after tuning should first be reproduced at supported defaults, without increasing voltage to make POST succeed. One possible explanation is that the low-power cell can no longer retain clock and setup data.
Preserve recovery options
Unstable overclocking can corrupt data and should not be used during diagnosis. Some laptops use rechargeable or cabled cells that must not be substituted blindly.
Firmware and hardware checks
- Return to documented baseline settings and test one hardware group at a time.
- Measure the cell and confirm settings persist with a known replacement.
Recovery and startup checks
If the checks support this cause, replace the correct cell and restore documented settings. Verification should cover repeated cold boots, memory load, graphics initialisation, restart and sleep.
