Identify Your Mac Before Buying a Dock, Charger or Replacement Part
“MacBook Pro with USB-C” is not enough information to select every dock, charger or replacement component. Machines with similar cases can have different chip families, display limits and internal parts.
Make a compact specification note
Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Record the complete model name, chip or processor and installed macOS version. Apple notes that clicking the version can reveal its build number when a support request needs that extra detail.
If the model name is still ambiguous, hold Option while opening the Apple menu and choose System Information. Its Hardware section provides a model identifier. This can distinguish machines that are casually described with the same marketing name.
Write the details as text instead of sharing an uncropped screenshot containing the serial number. A provider may need the serial number privately for a precise check, but it does not need to appear in a public forum or marketplace question.
Describe the job the accessory must do
For a dock, specify how many displays you intend to run, their resolution and refresh rate, the storage devices connected and whether the dock must charge the Mac. For a charger, include the existing adapter's markings and the charging connector. For a replacement part, include the symptom and ask for model-specific matching.
Do not treat the shape of a USB-C plug as proof of video, charging wattage or transfer-speed compatibility. Use the exact Mac specification and the accessory manufacturer's compatibility information together.
If the Mac does not start, Apple's guide lists identification through its casing, packaging or the devices associated with your Apple Account. Compare that information with previous repair records: Apple notes that a replaced logic board can affect which serial number is current.
Keep the note with your equipment records and update it after a major hardware or software change.
