iMac Startup Power System: Which power connection does this Mac use?
Pattern to record: The desktop remains unresponsive with its normal power connection.
Use the correct Mac power design
Identify the iMac before tracing power: the 24-inch Apple-silicon iMac uses its dedicated external adapter, while many earlier models take mains power into the chassis. Record whether the display, fans or other functions show any startup activity. 24-inch Apple-silicon iMac models use a dedicated external adapter, while many earlier iMacs have an internal mains supply.
Power and data precautions
The external adapter or internal mains supply can contain hazardous voltage; display removal requires trained handling. A USB-C laptop charger does not replace this desktop’s specified power connection.
Model-specific checks
- Identify the external-adapter or internal-supply design, then distinguish startup activity from a built-in display or backlight fault.
- Identify the model, inspect the specified power lead or adapter and compare a working outlet before internal diagnosis.
Repair and startup verification
If the checks support this cause, replace a proven defective, model-compatible lead or supply; if input power is correct, continue to startup and display diagnosis. Verification should cover cold start, built-in display, brightness, processor load, sleep and restart.
