iMac Startup Power System: Debris or damage at the power connection
Pattern to record: The power lead does not seat normally or there is visible damage around the inlet.
Use the correct Mac power design
Identify the iMac before tracing power: the 24-inch Apple-silicon iMac uses its dedicated external adapter, while many earlier models take mains power into the chassis. Record whether the display, fans or other functions show any startup activity. Contamination or damage at the model’s actual power connector may prevent secure electrical contact.
Power and data precautions
The external adapter or internal mains supply can contain hazardous voltage; display removal requires trained handling. Do not clean inside a live mains inlet or push metal tools into it.
Model-specific checks
- Identify the external-adapter or internal-supply design, then distinguish startup activity from a built-in display or backlight fault.
- Disconnect the supply and inspect the correct power connector externally; distinguish it from USB-C accessory ports.
Repair and startup verification
If the checks support this cause, replace a damaged lead or have the inlet assessed before further use. Verification should cover cold start, built-in display, brightness, processor load, sleep and restart.
