Stop a Power BI View-Switch Bookmark From Resetting the Reader’s Slicer
A view-switch button can unexpectedly return a report to the region that was selected when its bookmark was saved. The visible chart may change correctly while the reader's question silently changes too. Separate the presentation state from the filter state the reader should retain.
Work in a copy of the Power BI Desktop report with permission to edit it. Identify the chart and table that should alternate and a Region slicer that should keep its current value. Write down that intended behavior before updating existing bookmarks.
Capture the intended presentation scope
Open View, Bookmarks and the Selection pane. A bookmark's More options menu controls Data, Display and All visuals or Selected visuals. Data captures filter and slicer states; Display captures visibility and spotlight. For a presentation-only switch, clear Data, keep the required Display behavior and use Selected visuals after selecting the chart and table that the bookmark should affect.
Set the first visibility arrangement in the Selection pane, then add or update its bookmark. Repeat for the second arrangement with the same intended visual scope. Microsoft documents that visibility changes need the bookmark to be updated; changing the canvas alone does not establish the saved result.
Give the bookmarks names describing the views, such as Workload chart and Workload table. Keep unrelated page objects outside the selected scope when they should not change. Inspect the scope on both bookmarks, since one correctly configured direction does not fix the other.
Test the reader's current selection
Select West in the Region slicer and note one known West-only result. Switch to the chart bookmark, then the table bookmark. Both views should still describe West. Change to East and repeat in both directions, checking a different known record or value.
A hidden slicer continues filtering the report. If a view conceals the slicer, inspect its current state rather than assuming invisibility means its filter was removed. Consider whether the visible report still makes that selection understandable to its reader.
If a switch resets the region, revisit Data capture and each bookmark's included visuals before changing the source data. If it changes an unrelated object, inspect Selected visuals scope. These two failures require different corrections even though both occur after clicking a bookmark.
Finally, reopen the saved report and repeat the two-region test in the intended viewing environment. Retain any deliberately data-restoring bookmarks as a clearly different feature. The accepted view switch changes how the current selection is presented while preserving the question the reader already chose.
