Record the Windows USB4 Device Tree Before Changing a Dock Setup
A photograph of the cables and Windows' view of the USB4 connection answer different questions. The first records the physical arrangement; the second shows which supported host and device routers the operating system has detected.
Save work and finish storage transfers before planning any reconnection. Record the laptop port, dock, cable and attached accessories in their current arrangement. Begin with observation so the evidence is not lost through several simultaneous changes.
Inspect the USB4-specific view
Microsoft introduced the USB4 Hubs and Devices settings page in Windows 11 build 22621.1778. On a supported system, open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, USB, USB4 Hubs and Devices to inspect attached devices and capabilities.
The page depends on detection of a USB4 host router. Microsoft notes that some hosts appear dynamically when a USB4 device is attached; manufacturers can configure the page's visibility for that design. Its absence on an unconnected system therefore needs model-specific interpretation. A non-USB4 system will not show this page.
Do not add a registry value merely to display a missing page. A visible settings heading would not demonstrate that the hardware acquired USB4 capability.
For another view, open Device Manager and choose View, Devices by connection. Microsoft's USB4 documentation shows a host router, its root device router and attached device routers. Record the relevant branch rather than taking an unreadable screenshot of every device.
Compare one arrangement at a time
Match the detected entries with your physical connection note. Redact serial numbers or other identifiers before sharing screenshots outside the authorised support channel.
If a supported comparison is needed, change one documented port or cable after safely disconnecting storage, then capture the same view again. Record whether the missing entry appeared, disappeared or remained unchanged. That is stronger evidence than reporting only that the dock felt faster.
Enumeration is not a complete performance test. A device appearing in the tree does not prove the intended monitor mode, storage speed or charging power. Test the required function separately and keep its result alongside the tree. This gives support a reproducible topology and a specific failing function without assuming every symptom belongs to the same component.
