High-Refresh Gaming Monitor: Power-supply capacitor deterioration | Auckland
Pattern to record: Startup is delayed, brightness pulses or the display improves after warming.
Separate the panel from the source
Record resolution, refresh rate, colour mode and whether variable refresh is enabled. These determine link demand. Backlight and LCD edge-bond checks below apply only to LCD models, not to an OLED display. One possible explanation is that aged capacitors no longer smooth the monitor's internal supply rails.
Display-path checks
- Compare native and lower refresh rates, different certified cables and another graphics source.
- Measure ripple and startup behaviour with safe isolation procedures.
Handling and electrical safety
Stop testing if the monitor emits a burning smell or flashes from its power section. Mains capacitors can retain dangerous charge after unplugging.
Image and input verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the failed rated components and inspect heat-stressed areas. Verification should cover native refresh, lower refresh, variable refresh, colour, sleep and sustained gaming.
